Relaxation can take many different forms and not every resort gets the balance right. Too little going on and one could get bored, too much and the stress of choosing undermines the tranquillity.
So, let me tell you about Shanti Maurice Resort on the South West tip of Mauritius in Bel Ombre. It is a very peaceful, tranquil hotel which majors on spa – at 7,000sqm its spa is the largest in the Indian Ocean. If Indian or Balinese massage is your thing (and it’s definitely mine) you’ll think it’s the best on the island. Here’s why I think the Shanti Maurice gets the art of relaxation right:
Shanti Maurice has a resident Ayurvedic doctor who will see you on arrival and created a tailored programme of treatments. This means that it’s a great resort for anyone who wants to pursue a tailored wellness plan but it’s equally good if you just want to enjoy wonderful treatments.
If you can afford a villa I would say go for it – they’re well-appointed and benefit from a beautiful vista. Because the resort is situated near the reef, you get the sound of the waves crashing which provides precisely the kind of soundtrack you need to unwind.
They also come with their own private pool – and I don’t mean just a plunge pool. In the wintertime, they’re heated to 32 degrees making them perfect for a dip all year round.
A Hand-Selected Supper
When the bell rings at the main entrance to Shanti Maurice, it’s time to dash as local fishermen arrive on their pirogue boats with the morning’s catch. Joined by the chef you can select, and look forward to, your own hand-selected supper.
Green and Pleasant
There’s no shuffling down corridors in flimsy slippers en route to your treatments – all 36 acres are sensitively landscaped, offering beautiful areas to explore including bridges and herb gardens that make your journey to the spa an experience in itself.
Barefoot and Beautiful
In Mauritius, dinner is a special occasion and guests are expected to dress for dinner (only right and proper given the incredible effort that the resorts go to). However, Shanti Maurice offers a little break from this at their ‘Beach Shack’ where you can sit on a stool with your feet in the sand while eating wonderfully fresh food.
Quiet – Artist at Work
Shanti Maurice offers total peace and quiet but also excellent Wi-Fi, making it the perfect place to work on your novel. It also has resident artists who visit twice a week to help guests create their own masterpieces.
A Spot of Sport
For those who use sport to unwind there is unlimited complimentary golf, free shuttles to the dive centre and complimentary kite surfing. For families that like to relax together, there’s also a kids club and a free inter-connecting room for children under 12.
As for me, Shanti Maurice gets my vote for anyone who needs a complete break from everything. Just the sound of the waves, wonderful food and superb spa treatments – bliss.
