Mauritius location on a world map

Lying in the Indian Ocean (20 17 S, 57 33 E) to the east of Madagascar and Southern Africa, the island of Mauritius was discovered by the Portuguese in 1505 and before its independence in 1968, was held by the Dutch, French and British.

Mauritius is of volcanic origin, is ringed almost entirely by coral reefs and has a stable democracy with regular free elections and a positive human rights record. The country has attracted considerable foreign investment and has earned one of Africa's highest per capita incomes, with tourism playing a significant part in its economy.

The quality of the hotels and villas, and the variety of their facilities, make Mauritius an aspirational destination for the discerning traveller. Visitors to this paradise island will subsequently enjoy the innate hospitality of the Mauritian people and some of the world's best customer service.

All the hotels on the island are within about an hour's drive of the airport. You will be met in the airport arrivals hall by my representatives in Mauritius and then taken by private car to your chosen hotel or beach villa.

To make your initial search easier, I have listed the hotels in approximate price order and categorised them according to my own personal views to produce a star rating. Prices vary considerably according to the season, type of room and the category of flight but I can provide quotes for any number of hotel options upon request.

In principle, including economy flights, transfers, all taxes and accommodation on a half board basis per person per week, the general prices are as indicated on the right hand panel.

• Flights - From the UK, Mauritius is served by British Airways and Air Mauritius and offer direct flights, though it is also possible to fly Air France or Air Mauritius via Paris. Flights from any other part of the world can be arranged on request.

The flight time to Mauritius from the UK is about 12 hours. There are no charter flights and you can only travel on a scheduled service. Most flights are overnight with the best departure time in the late afternoon, arriving in Mauritius in time for breakfast the next day. The departure and arrivals in the following table are local times.
